Lowell Gene Riethmuller of Newark, DE, age 74, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022. He was born on June 9, 1947 in West Point, NE to the late Norman Jean Riethmuller and Lotus Hertha (Maack) Riethmuller.
Lowell was born and raised in Nebraska before moving to the east cost in the early 1970’s after earning his bachelor’s degree in German. With a passion for education inspired by his high school German teacher, Lowell taught high school in Elkton, MD. He went on to earn a mater’s degree in German and later a master’s in English language studies from the University of Delaware in 1984. Lowell was asked to tutor in the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI), which led to a 35-year career with U of D until his retirement on his birthday in 2017. In addition to teaching linguistics, he taught his students using his interests in audio and video technology, photography, music and computers which helped to revolutionize the ELI’s program.
In addition to his lifelong passion for learning, Lowell was a talented musician who played piano professionally and for pleasure, having played in the Seven Legends in the 1960’s and piano bars later in life. Lowell also enjoyed photography and traveled extensively, having visited 23 countries and 49 of 50 United States.
Lowell is survived by his brother, Ronald Riethmuller of Lincoln, NE and numerous cousins.
Services for Lowell will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
