Lois Brinley Ludman, age 83, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 22, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lois was the cherished daughter of the late Howard and Marion (née Williams) Brinley. She was the devoted and loving wife of Frederick Ludman III, with whom she shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.
Lois and Frederick began their lifelong journey together in a true love story—eloping in 1961 when Lois was just 18 years old. Their marriage was built on love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. They made their home in Newark, Delaware, where they raised their family and created a lifetime of treasured memories.
A dedicated and passionate educator, Lois devoted much of her life to teaching and inspiring young minds. She taught fifth grade at Brookside Elementary School in Newark after graduating from the University of Delaware and continuedher teaching career in Parkersburg, West Virginia with a sixth– grade class at McKinley Elementary School with the class winning an award for a class project on The Childrens Guide To Wood County. Her love of learning extended far beyond the classroom. Lois volunteered as a literacy tutor, helping adults to read and Chinese students to learn English as a second language. In recognition of her dedication, she was honored as “Distinguished Volunteer Service Award in 2002” by Senator Tom Carper.
While residing at Newark Manor Nursing Home, she continued to share her passion for reading by helping to establish a resident reading program, bringing joy and engagement to many.
In her personal life, Lois was an avid reader with a deep interest in history. She also enjoyed writing poetry, expressing her creativity and thoughtful spirit through words. Known for her warmth, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor, Lois brought light and laughter to those around her. She will be rememberedas a happy, creative, and compassionate woman whose presence enriched the lives of so many.
Lois is survived by her beloved husband, Frederick Ludman III; her children, Frederick Ludman IV and his wife Ann, Emily Blakey, and John Ludman and his wife Angela; and her cherished grandchildren, Andrea, Chris, Alexandra, Thomas, and Eric. She is also survived by extended family and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Newark Manor Nursing Home for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Lois.
A family-directed memorial service will be held at a later date.
