We are saddened to announce the passing of Leon Ashcraft on Friday, July 11th. While he may not have been the most outgoing, Leon was a cherished member of our family and made a significant impact through his dedication and hard work.
Born to Reba and Leon Ashcraft Jr., Leon was instilled with a deep appreciation for family and community. He was a loving sibling to four brothers and sisters, three of whom survived him: Faith Smith (Butch), Jane Clark (Daniel) and David Ashcraft (Regina); preceded in death by James Ashcraft.
Leon was born on August 8, 1953, grew up in Kiamensi Gardens and graduated from John Dickinson High School, Wilmington, DE, in 1971. He was provided with an apprenticeship at 17 to learn masonry, a trade that became his lifelong passion. He went on to start his own company, L.A. Masonry, helping to construct homes and buildings throughout the state of Delaware. Although he could be demanding, his crew was like a second family to him, and his commitment to his craft was unparalleled.
He found immense joy in spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews, as well as his extended grandchildren, all who held a special place in his heart. He is remembered by Justin, Jill, Alison, Matthew, Nathan, David, Italia and Thomas, and is reunited in spirit with Amanda, Jason, and Joshua.
Favorite memories include the toy trains that Leon set up for Christmas, fireworks and crabs to celebrate the Fourth of July, his cute dogs for which he cared so much, and “unforgettable” skiing and tubing from his boat on the Elk River, in Maryland, where he lived most of his life.
Leon touched the hearts of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private funeral is currently planned.
