Leon “Roger” Dye, 82, passed away on February 23, 2025. Born on May 12, 1942, in Swords Creek,
Virginia, he was the beloved son of the late Dennis and Vada (nee Breedlove) Dye and Stepfather Hobert Hale. He was also the devoted and loving husband of 60 years to the late Betty (nee Keys) Dye, with whom he shared a lifetime of cherished memories.
Roger dedicated his career to tree trimming, a field in which he was an expert. He began his work at
Henkels & McCoy before moving on to Asplundh, where he worked diligently until his well-earned
retirement in 1996. His dedication to his craft was evident, and his work ethic was admired by all who
knew him. Beyond his profession, Roger had a passion for life’s simpler joys. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard, always ready for a friendly game. A true tinkerer at heart, he took great pleasure in working on small engines, repairing everything from chainsaws to lawnmowers. His ability to fix and restore machinery was a talent he carried throughout his life.
Roger was a man of few words but had a presence that spoke volumes. His quiet strength and
unwavering support were deeply felt by those closest to him. He will be profoundly missed by all who
had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Roger was preceded in death by his siblings, Nila Perkins, Lewis Dye, and Russell Dye.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his children, Roxanne Glessner-
Cameron, James Dye Sr. and wife Dary, John Dye and wife Maggie, and Cindy Ortega and husband
Art Hersh; his grandchildren, Austin Glessner and wife, Kristen, Shane Glessner, James Dye Jr., Hannah Dye,
Christopher Culver, and Jaclyn Ortega; step-grandchildren, Valerie Spiese, Carrie Spangler, and Robert
Battista; and his great-grandchildren, Kira, Hollis, Major, Baby Brandon, and Carsyn. He is also survived by a multitude of extended family members and dear friends who were touched by his kindness and quiet wisdom.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM at R.T. Foard Funeral
Home, located at 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, Maryland. The family will begin receiving friends
at 10:00 AM. Following the service, Roger will be laid to rest at West Nottingham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Roger’s legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who
knew him. He will never be forgotten.
