Kevin William McCartan

July 28, 1951 - January 4, 2026

Our brother, Kevin McCartan, age 74, passed away on January 4, 2026, in Newark, Delaware.

He grew up in Newark, Delaware with his 9 siblings, and spent his grade school years at Holy Angels Catholic School and St. Peter’s Cathedral. He graduated from Christiana High School in 1969. He enlisted in the Navy after High School, taking him to different parts of the world, including Alaska and Japan. He especially loved Japan where he was stationed for 2 years. He loved to share his experiences and was extremely proud of his service to our great country.

After his Navy service he attended the University of Delaware, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science. He eventually moved to Northern California where he found his true calling as a teacher. He dedicated three decades as an educator in Catholic middle schools until his retirement in 2012. He truly had a love and passion for teaching, and he fondly referred to his students as “my kids”. He could talk endlessly about his students and classroom studies, and the community spirit within the school and beyond. He enjoyed great rapport with students and parents, maintaining many friendships throughout the years, and later teaching the children of some of his former students.

In 2021 Kevin left beautiful Benicia, California and moved back to Delaware to be closer to family. We are grateful.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Bernard McCartan (2006 and 2009), his brothers, Mike McCartan (1987), and Paul McCartan ( 2004), and brothers in law, Frank Konwinski (2015), and Mark Metzger (2017).

He is survived by his sisters, Mary Konwinski, Kerry Metzger, Maureen Harris (Rick), and his brothers, Bill McCartan, Chris McCartan (Tammy Smithers), Jack McCartan (Valerie), and Tom McCartan (Jen Pollock). He is also survived by his son Brandt Boulden (Lisa), and several nieces and nephews.

We love and miss you “KDR”.

Kevin was a very good friend. I had the honor to meet him at St. Dominic’s where my girls both went to school. He was a gentle and caring teacher who always had time for everyone. When my daughter became sick, he visited her in San Francisco. When my father lay dying, he visited him in Napa. He came to his funeral, he came to our family parties. He gifted beautiful glass pieces to my girls that I still hold dearly. He never wanted to leave California, but alas he left to be with family. May you rest in eternal peace Kevin, and may perpetual light shine upon you. God has gained an archangel and we here are all the better because of you. I’m sorry we never made it to the East Coast to visit you. That is a huge regret and loss. But I am comforted knowing that you are watching over us and therefore, always present. I reached out to Kevin several times over the past few years with no response and now understand why. I knew Kevin had Parkinson’s but didn’t know his illness had progressed so deeply. We had a wonderful dinner together in Benecia, maybe 7-8 years ago, and had plans to get together again when I was passing through. Kevin was a close friend during our 2+ years of Navy service in Japan. He later came out to California and stayed with me in Sonoma while settling into his new life away from his family. Kevin was always a joy to be around, with an infectious smile and laugh. My condolences to his family and all who loved him.

I was blessed to have gotten to know Kevin while he lived At Brandywine Assisted Living. We shared love of classic rock and had many spirited conversations. He was a kind man. I'm sure God welcomed Kevin with open arms.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. McCarten as my teacher in the fifth grade. This would have been 1995. I believe it was his first year teaching at Saint Dominic's. He was a wonderful teacher and kept us all focused during the year, with promises of crumpets. His passion and care for the students was above the rest. He was a kind man

Our condolences to all of Kevin’s family. He was a great teacher at St Dominic School where our son Chris had him in 5th grade.

Mr. McCartan was not only an amazing teacher, but a wonderful human being. Had such a great childhood during my time at St. Dominic’s School. I’m glad I got to spend part of my life with him. My condolences to the family and friends
