Kenneth Ray Miller, 72, of Rising Sun, MD passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at his home, after performing in “The Musical Journey of Ola Belle Reed” at the Elkton Library. He was the husband of Dorothy (Dottie) Fogleman Miller, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.
Born on March 29, 1940 in Colora, MD, he was the son of the late Raymond Austin Miller and Arlean Conner Miller. Kenny grew up on the family farm in Rising Sun, MD and also assisted with the family store in Conowingo, MD.
Kenny retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1993. At that time he was able to devote himself as a full-time farmer. He loved the land, his family and his music.
Kenny started playing music at the age of four, and continued that passion through the years, his main instrument being the 5 string banjo. Kenny was known for his skilled Scruggs-style playing. Kenny was featured on the first LP Blue Grass album recorded in the United States which is now in the Smithsonian Institute and made appearances playing music with Bill & Charlie Monroe.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Randy L. Miller and wife Teresa; four daughters, Carol A. Brown, Sharon A. Strohmaier and husband Wayne, Dorothy A. Stephens and husband, Keith and Lori A. Wright and husband Barry, all of the Rising Sun area; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Friends and family may call at Truth and Life Center, 1924 West Pulaski Highway, North East, MD, from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012 at Truth and Life Center where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will follow at West Nottingham Cemetery in Colora, MD.
