Kenneth Hughes Skelton (87) of Colora, Maryland, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. Born in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Herbert Percy Skelton and Selma Fiore (née Burton). He was the devoted husband of 65 years to Joann Skelton (née Ayers).
Ken proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, living by the motto “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.” After his service, he enjoyed a long and respected career with Philadelphia Electric Company, working 33 years and serving as Tool Room Manager at the Conowingo Dam Plant until his retirement. He was highly regarded by his coworkers for his skill, work ethic, and willingness to help others.
An avid outdoorsman, Ken loved hunting deer and small game, as well as fishing. He maintained a hunting cabin where family and friends gathered for many memorable times. He was also well known for his strong singing voice and his enthusiastic performances at karaoke.
Ken was deeply committed to service. He served as Commander of the Sons of the American Legion, was a member of the Marine Corps League, and served as the Captain of the American Legion Honor Guard for 26 years, honoring all veterans with dignity and respect.
Above all, family was Ken’s greatest priority. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, and honorable man who never had a negative word said about him. A natural caregiver and mentor, he quietly helped many coworkers improve their lives by teaching them basic reading and writing skills. His steady presence, good humor, and giving heart touched everyone who knew him
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Oliver P. Fiore, who raised him as a son, his children: Lori Ann McDowell & Kenneth Joseph Skelton and his siblings: Herbert Percy Skelton Jr., Richard Francis Skelton, Diane Rosa Labiak, and Gail Marie Cabassa.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Skelton; daughters Sharon Jo Nickle and her husband James, and Catherine Skelton; grandchildren Colin Dougherty, Bri Dougherty, Mary Parks (Matt), Justin Nickle, Patti Nickle, Katie Engelhardt (Matt), Kristine McDowell, Paul McDowell, Savannah Sheets, and Kenny Sheets; great-grandchildren Coleson, Kinsley, Ben, and Leo; and many extended family members and friends.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery.
