Joseph Walter Wiggins, age 103, of Rising Sun, MD passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. He was born in Colora, MD on September 22, 1920 to the late Harry Christopher Wiggins and Violet Charlotte (Culley) Wiggins.
Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 194. After serving in the military, Joseph went on to work in the Mechanic Division at Aberdeen Proving Ground before retiring. He then went on to be a carpenter and used his talent to build his own home. He took great joy in being outdoors working in the yard landscaping and gardening both flowers and vegetables. Joseph loved woodworking, making many clocks and decoys over the years. His family will always remember him as a very kind, thoughtful, gentle soul, who was extremely determined and always put others before himself.
Joseph is survived by his three children: Harry W. Wiggins; Phyllis W. Unger; and Doug L. Wiggins and his wife, Cheryl; daughter-in-law, Nancy Wiggins; sixteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Erma Wiggins; son, Joseph E. Wiggins; two grandchildren: Erin Yale and Kelly Talley and seven siblings: Ellis Wiggins, James Wiggins, Eleanor Wiggins, Hazel Wiggins, Lawrence Wiggins, Harold Wiggins, and Richard Wiggins.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Mount Pleasant Church, 1713 Liberty Grove Road, Colora, MD 21917 where family and friends may begin attending at 10:00AM. Burial will follow at West Nottingham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made payable to the “American Legion Post 194” or “Mount Pleasant Church” and send in care of R.T.
