Joseph S. Barker, 90 of Newark, Delaware, passed away on Sunday November 5, 2023. He was born in Vineland, NJ on September 3, 1933. At the young age of 17 he began his career in the glass industry where he apprenticed and continued to work until September 1959. At the age of 25, he took a job in Wilmington, DE as an apparatus glass craftsman. In 1965 he was promoted to plant manager, a position which no longer required actual glassblowing. During these years he tried his skill at making glass paperweights but preferred fabricating scientific apparatus. Upon the sale of the company, he decided to start his own business and continued manufacturing scientific glassware for the next thirteen years. After 47 years of doing what he loved most, he felt it was time to retire and give back to the industry. For the next 20 years he volunteered his time and knowledge, at Salem Community College Glass Education Center, supporting the Scientific and Artistic programs.
He is survived by his wife, of 70 years, Nancy, four children, son Joseph R. Barker and wife, Patricia, Daughters Sheree’ Madic, Cynthia Barker and Crystal Barker, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Per Joe’s request there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made, in his memory, to Aetna Emergency Ambulance Service c/o R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
