Joseph Gulick Jr., who died on May 6, was born in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 8, 1922. He was the second of three children of Annie and Joseph Gulick Sr.

Joe grew up in Chevy Chase, Md., and he helped support his family with a newspaper route during the Great Depression. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in the District, Joe went to work for Westinghouse in Baltimore. He married his childhood sweetheart Norma Walker on Dec. 12, 1942. Joe and Norma were married 71 years before her death in 2014.

Joe served in the Coast Guard during World War II on the USS El Paso (PF 41), a patrol frigate that took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. In 1943, while he was serving in the Pacific, his oldest child, Bonnie, was born. Joe and Norma’s two sons, Bruce and Larry, were born after the war, in 1945 and ’49 respectively.

After his discharge in 1945, Joe enrolled in the University of Maryland’s engineering school and graduated as an electrical engineer in 1950. He then went to work for the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, concentrating primarily on the guidance system for the Talos anti-aircraft missile, which was deployed on Navy ships. After the Hopkins Lab relocated from Silver Spring to Laurel in Howard County, the Gulicks moved to Clarksville, Md., not far from his place of work. Joe planned and helped build the family’s new home.

After Joe retired from the Hopkins Lab in 1977, he worked for TSC for several years teaching missile guidance to engineers.

In the 1980s, he planned and oversaw the building of two single-family houses in Locust Point on the Elk River and three town houses on the C&D Canal. Joe and Norma lived in one of the homes on the Elk River until 2012, when they moved to one of the town homes that Joe had built.

For most of his life, Joe’s passion was photography. He studied photography at Cecil Community College and has had his work exhibited in various locations in the area.

Joe is survived by a sister, Rennie Quible, three children, one daughter-in-law (Debbie Gulick); one son-in-law (Aaron Leibel); six grandchildren (Lauren Cohen, Debra Goldschmidt, Abby Mechtinger, Bruce Gulick II, Clay Gulick and Mat Gulick) and nine great-grandchildren (Adva, Yotam, and Aviya Cohen; Dafna and Hadas Goldschmidt; Noam and Amit Mechtinger; and Lucas and Isaac Gulick).
