John Richard Griffith, “Doc”, age 78 of Newark, DE passed away on August 8, 2026. He was born on March 22, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John Mason Griffith and Sarah Jane (Kirkpatrick) Griffith.

Doc was a family man through and through. He was mostly seen wearing sports clothing especially his beloved Philadelphia teams. His family joked that he “bled green”. If he wasn’t supporting his sports teams, he could be found fishing where he found peace and solitude. Doc was a proud member of the US Air Force where he served in Hof, Germany for 3 years. He was a member of the VFW for many years.

Doc is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Griffith; children: Amy Burkart (Jamie), Staci Knaus (Ken), and Richard Stewart; grandchildren: Christian, Chase, Carter, and Cassidy; sisters: Lynn Gibbon (Ronald) and Virginia “Ginny” Marioni (Charles).

A celebration of life will be held for Doc on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 12PM at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may attend the viewing beginning at 11AM. Burial will follow after the service at 2PM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” and sent in care of the funeral home.
