John “Jack” Joseph Johnson, age 76, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024. Born on February 13, 1948, in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the beloved son of the late Wesley and Mary (née Bilderback) Johnson.
John was a proud graduate of Elkton High School, Class of 1966. Following graduation, he began his career at the DuPont Corporation before leaving to serve his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After completing his military service, John pursued further education at Cecil College and returned to DuPont in Newport, Delaware, where he worked as an Industrial Mechanic until his well-deserved retirement.
John had a lifelong passion for classic cars and took great pride in restoring them. Among his cherished restorations were a 1972 Chevrolet El Camino and a 1956 Ford Pickup, both of which showcased his dedication and craftsmanship. In addition to his love for cars, he enjoyed playing cards with friends and sharing his remarkable sense of humor. John was a master storyteller and the unofficial family historian, preserving the legacy of those who came before him through his vivid recollections and anecdotes.
An active member of American Legion Post 15 in Elkton, Maryland, John found great camaraderie among his fellow veterans. His warm personality, quick wit, and unwavering loyalty endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Johnson. He is survived by his devoted sisters, Mary Etta Reedy and her husband, Rick, and Lynn Johnson; his cherished niece, Danielle Johnson; and his beloved nephew, Ryan Johnson.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s memory to the American Legion Post 15, 129 W Main Street, Elkton, MD 21921.
John’s life was a testament to hard work, service, and the joy of sharing stories and laughter with those he loved. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
