John F. Sheehand (“Jack” or “Pop pop”), age 95, of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully on October 28, 2023.
Jack was born in Woodbury, New Jersey in 1927. He spent his teenage summers in Ocean City, New Jersey working as a lifeguard, movie projectionist at the Moorlyn Theatre, and bell hop at the Flanders Hotel. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Fresh from the Army, he began his 44-year career at DuPont and in his spare time enjoyed woodworking, military history, and repairing anything and everything.
He was an avid boater and captained the Jolly Jack on the waters of the Chesapeake and Sassafras until he sold it in 1965 to make the down payment on a home in Newark after he married Melva Sharp, a young widow with five children.
He was preceded in death by Melva, his wife of 56 years. He is survived by five stepchildren, Sherry, Paula (Ken), Melanie, Suzanne (John), and Roland (Tammy), 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Jack’s family is deeply grateful to the staff of Millcroft and Accent Hospice for their care and support. In accordance with Jack’s wishes, his memorial service will be private.
