John Cavazos, Jr., age 49, of Newark, DE passed away on Saturday, November 03, 2018. He was born in Harlingen, TX, on Jul 3, 1969 to Juan W. Cavazos and Maria (Gonzalez) Cavazos.

John graduated and received a Doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts. He was an associate professor in the Computer and Information Sciences Department at the University of Delaware. He and previously worked as a JP Morgan Chase Faculty Fellow in the Institute for Financial Services Analytics. He also had a joint appointment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and was founder and CEO of AI Cyber Security start-up Cyber 20/20 Inc.

John was well-respected in the research community where he has been published extensively in the areas of Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, and Compilers.

He particularly enjoyed working with students on his various research projects. His colleagues were always struck by how he seemed to have (electronic) connections with his students at all hours of the day and night, and even on weekends. He had boundless amounts of energy.

John’s interests and hobbies were extensive. In addition to being a world traveler, he had an enduring zest and passion for life. His sense of humor and wit could always lighten a room and his presence will be missed.

John is survived by his wife, Victoria Stephanie Emma Kumaran of London, UK; two sons: John Matthew Cavazos of New Castle, DE and Louis John Cavazos of Germany; daughter, Emma Luisa Cavazos of Germany; father, Juan W. Cavazos of Brownsville, TX; mother, Maria Reyna Cavazos of Trenton, IL; and three sisters: Patricia Cavazos-Rehg (Mike) of Trenton, IL, Jessica Cavazos-Rochat (Ross) of Chesterfield, MO and Roxanne Vara (Robert) of Kingwood, TX.

A visitation will be held at 1pm on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. A graveside service will follow in Newark Cemetery at 2pm. At 3pm there will be a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at Café Gelato, 90 E. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
