Joel Louise Ervin, 85, of Bear, DE passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016 at Genesis Healthcare in Hockessin, DE.
Born September 28, 1930 in Bradford, PA, Joel was the daughter of the late Bruce Carothers and Genevieve Nora (Gnagey) Mellinger. She had a passion for theater and was active in Franklin and Marshall College’s Green Room in Lancaster, PA and with the Senior Troupe of the North Canton Ohio Playhouse. She was a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and completed her master’s degree at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She was a member of the Newark Senior Center as well as the Alpha Gamma Delta Women’s Sorority which promotes academic excellence. Joel was dedicated to her career in education, working 30 years at Franklin and Marshall College in a variety of positions including the Government department, Office of the Dean and lastly, as Associate Director of Continuing Education. She will be greatly missed and cherished by those who knew and loved her.
Joel is survived by her daughter, Dale A. Ervin of Lewes, DE, son Dana S. Ervin and daughter-in-law, Stephanie A. Matzo of Petaluma, CA; grandchildren Brendan M. Gibbons of Columbus, OH, Lauren A. Finnegan of Hilliard, OH; son-in-law Ryan Finnegan and great- grandchildren Kendall and Rory Finnegan.
Services for Joel will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
