Jean Northrop, 81, of Elkton, MD, passed away December 22, 2013 at Union Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Livermore, KY, Jean was the daughter of the late Golson and Lois Hoover Boyken. She was a skilled seamstress and talented cook. She enjoyed travelling and discovering new places, especially to Paris, France and Shop Rite. Jean had an affinity for languages and was fluent in French and German. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends who remember her fiery spirit and wicked sense of humor.

Surviving are two daughters, Karolyn Bowe (Curtis) of Elkton and Kathleen Merritt (Russell) of Elkton; and two adopted sons, Timothy Walton of North East and Don Alexander of Aberdeen, MD; six grandchildren, Angela Northrop, Kassandra Walton, and Karlynne, Christian, Kyrie and Charles Bowe; two sisters and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, William T. Northrop; her sons, Thomas William (Billy) Northrop and Albert Kenneth (Kenny) Northrop.

A service honoring her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday December 28, 2013 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 259 East Main St., Elkton, MD 21921 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are welcome, however contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to A Buddy for Life c/o the funeral home.

Kathy, So sorry for your loss! Your Mom was so cool! I remember spending the night at your house...one of the few times I was allowed out! She was a tremendous lady and I know you will miss her. Sending live you way! Sue

Kathy & Karolyn: I am so sorry the loss of your Mother. Good memories will pop up now and then that will put a smile on your face. The first time I met your family was when Kenny and I came up from Norfolk. Your Mom treated me like family. I will always remember her humor and cooking, but I will never forget her driving her "Hot Rod Fury". My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was very sorry to hear that your mother had passed away. I was unable to attend the service but wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

It was such a pleasure to finally get to meet Jean last December after hearing so many fun stories about her. We could have talked about eating French cheese and drinking red wine all night! While she is no longer with us in person, her spirit lives on through her daughters and grandchildren. May the memories of her life bring you peace and comfort. With love and sympathy, Sasha.

Karolyn & Kathy Your mom was a special lady to me, when I first met her when your dad passed away it was if I had known her forever, she was a lady who I have never forgotten, just last wednesday I told my wife that I wanted to call her in reference to the holiday but i couldnt locate a number. She has been on my mind wandering how she was doing. My heart felt feelings go out to you girls because I know that she loved you dearly. In the short time I got to know u...u showed me many things. That coupons are good, not to wait on people, and it's funny to give other a hard time when u don't get ur own way. And when it comes down to it never change what makes who you are. I love u mom-mom.
