Janet Reid Smith Wolf, age 82, of Landenberg, PA died November 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at home. Janet was born on February 24, 1943, in Mooresville, NC, to Arthur Lynn Smith, Sr., and Gladys Davidson Smith where she joined older brothers Arthur Lynn Smith, Jr., and John T. Smith. She recalled her childhood with happy memories of growing up in a large, close-knit family full of cousins, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews when she became an aunt at age 11. Although she picked up the nickname of Fireball previously by burning down the family barn, she loved being called Aunt Janet.
She met her forever love Terrence Lee Wolf at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. While there are varying stories of how that meeting happened, it led to an August 1965 wedding, a few months after their graduation. They moved to Rising Sun, MD, making it home for 40 years, raising two children, Tracy and Rick in their home on Brinker Court. Their Christmas Eve open house was a town event; she knew how to throw a party! She found a second family in Rising Sun with a circle of friends that supported each other through life’s journey, often over a game of Bridge.
Janet taught English and Health & PE in the Cecil County Public School system for over 20 years, primarily at Rising Sun High School. She was known for her no-nonsense, but fair, approach. You rarely had to guess what Janet was thinking! Her competitive spirit was no secret and if you were lucky enough to call her Coach or Wolfie, you knew this to be true. While she coached various sports at RSHS, her passion was coaching Rising Sun Little League softball in the community she adored. The number of lives she influenced over her 30-year coaching career is immeasurable. She also volunteered her time decorating Christmas trees at Union Hospital and delivering Meals on Wheels. If not on the ball field, you could find her on the golf course. She was a longtime member of Chantilly Manor, Newark, and Lake Wales Country Clubs. She had a love affair with the game and was the Ladies Club Champion many times over. She played countless courses on the east coast from the Maritime provinces in Canada to Florida. She treasured those golf trips with Terry and friends, especially her trips to Wintergreen Resort with the ladies.
She favored taking vacations south to see her family in North Carolina and Myrtle Beach and north to New England, especially Bar Harbor. Closer to home she loved planting and arranging flowers, baking a pie, and working on puzzles or playing games of any kind. She relished the title of ‘Nan” and doted on her grandchildren who she adored.
She was pre-deceased by her parents and brothers. Janet is survived by her husband Terry, and their children Tracy (Lee) Curry and Rick (Tonya) Wolf; grandchildren Nikolas (Erika), Reid, and Grace Reckner; and her grandchildren through Tracy and Rick’s blended families- Jeffery (Kasey), Joah, Jarett, AJ, Symon, and Jinger. She is further survived by brothers-in-law Doug (Mary Anne) Wolf and Chuck Wolf as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Janet’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched. She will be remembered as a spitfire, full of life, and for her acts of service to her community. Please tell a joke, the naughtier the better, swing a club, or raise a glass in memory of her.
A celebration of life will be held February 21, 2026, at Newark Country Club. In lieu of flowers consider a donation in memory of Janet to the Rising Sun Little League, PO Box 712, Rising Sun, MD 21911 or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Brandywine River Valley Hospice for the compassionate care they provided Janet.
