James “Jim” Thaddeus McPoland, 69, of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on January 4, 2026, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 10, 1956, Jim was the son of the late James Leo McPoland and Margaret Ellen (née Naismith) McPoland, and the devoted husband of his dearest companion and favorite person, Christina Ann (née Senock) McPoland.
Jim was employed by Quantum Controls and took great pride in his work as a respected electrician, earning many friends over his 50 years in the trade. He shared this passion with his son, Jimmy, passing down skills, wisdom, and a deep respect for the work they both loved. Their lively exchanges of work stories at family gatherings were a source of joy for them both.
Outside of work, Jim found peace and enjoyment riding his bike, especially along the C&D Canal Trail. A gifted and enthusiastic cook, he enjoyed grilling and preparing meals that brought his family and friends together. Jim also had a deep appreciation of music. His eclectic tastes were reflected in his loyal support of the radio station WXPN and attending the station’s annual concert on the Camden Waterfront became a favorite family tradition. Although Maryland was home for much of his life, Jim stayed true to his Pittsburgh roots, cheering for his beloved Steelers and Penguins with unwavering loyalty, and cherishing his trips back to the city.
Jim was known for his quick wit, playful humor, and infectious laugh. A true family man, he relished being ‘Poppy’ to his four adored grandchildren. He brought joy to those around him and leaves behind countless memories that will be treasured forever. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his wife, Christina, Jim is survived by his children: Jessica McPoland and her husband, Vasu Palli; Jimmy McPoland and his wife, Stephanie Hilaman; and Aimee McPoland; his grandchildren, Adelynn McPoland, Nathan Palli, Niam Palli, and Chase Heller; his sister, Julie McPoland; his cousin, Patricia Tokarski; and many extended family members and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine (McPoland) Hurst.
