James R. Sweeney, Sr.
“Big Jim”
James R. Sweeney, Sr. went home to be with The Lord on Monday, October 22, 2012 after succumbing from a brief unexpected illness.
Mr. Sweeney was born in Baltimore, Maryland and spent much of his early life in the Pasadena/Glen Burnie area. A graduate of Glen Burnie high school and a veteran of the United States Army, he was employed by Roper Eastern Corp in Baltimore for over 35 yrs and subsequently moved to Conowingo Md. where he and his family have operated Sweeney’s Pub for 23 years. He took great pride in running his business, and cherished greatly the many patrons who walked through the doors of his establishment whether it was a Sunday Raven’s game, pool league on Monday and Wednesday nights, or the annual pilgrimage to Vegas, friends of “Big Jim’s”, were friends for life. He enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City with his family and friends, crabbing, fishing, and talking local sports news and stats daily. He was an avid fan of the Ravens and a dedicated Orioles fan his entire life. He was a great father and a wonderful friend.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Judith Sweeney of Millington, MD; his three children Dawn Sweeney of Grasonville, MD, Sandy Sweeney of Conowingo MD, James R Sweeney, Jr. also of Conowingo MD; seven grandchildren, Casey Lyons , Macie Lyons , Sarah Sweeney , Breezlynn Sweeney, Cassie Peters, Ashley Kaine, Jonathan Kaine; and great grandson Cam Lyons.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held from 2pm-6pm on Saturday, October, 27, 2012 at Sweeney’s Pub, 196 Conowingo Rd., Conowingo, MD 21918. In lieu of flowers donations will be accepted at the service.
