James R. Hammer, 82, of Port Deposit, MD, passed away at his home on April 23, 2013, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Norton, VA on April 13, 1931, Jim was the son of the late Russell Lee and Myrtle Lucile Jones Hammer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked for 23 years of honorable federal service at Aberdeen Proving Ground as Chief of the Planners and Estimators. He also owned and operated Hammer Electric. In his younger years, he had a private pilot license and enjoyed flying out of Farmington Air Strip . He was an avid golfer that enjoyed golfing trips to St. Croix and Myrtle Beach. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and traveling. He also enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the Pennsylvania mountains. He was a member of The American Legion Post 194, The National Rifle Assoc., and Bass Pro.
Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Brooks Hammer, a daughter Dodie Knapp of Elkton; a son, Douglas Brooks of Elkton; four grandchildren, Dionne Knapp-Adkins, Natalie Knapp, Ashley Hammer and Charlie Brooks; four great grandchildren, Keith Wilson, Jr., Elle Adkins, Kaden Scott and Emme Adkins; two brothers, Douglas and Donald Hammer; and two sisters, Mary Evans and Shirley Dean. He was preceded in death by his daughter Regina Hammer, his brother Henry Hammer and his grandson Jason Brooks.
A service honoring his life will be held at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911 on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 12 noon. Friends and family may call at the funeral home beginning at 11 am. Burial will be in Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church c/o the funeral home.
