James P. Purvis (Jim) age 74 of Landenberg, PA passed away on February 8, 2017. He was born on February 4, 1943 in Augusta, GA.

Jim was in the ROTC Program at University Delaware and joined the Army where he served in Vietnam after graduation. Jim began working for the federal government in Health and Human Services as an executive director. Through work, he attended University of Southern California to obtain his Master’s Degree. While he continued working for the federal government, he attended Harvard University where he was a student in the Kennedy School of Government. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Reserves. Jim was a private pilot and loved flying his Mooney airplane. He was a member of two aircraft associations: Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and Mooney Airplane Pilots Association (MAPA). In Jim’s free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends and he loved to golf.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Judith (Judy) A. Purvis of Landenberg, PA; son, J. Michael Purvis and his wife, Stacey of Newark, DE; and grandson, Skyler Purvis of Newark, DE.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Luellen P. (Craft) Teschner and Eric Teschner.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00AM at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. A visitation will be held one hour prior beginning at 10:00AM. A committal service will follow at Newark Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Alzheimer’s Association” and sent in care of the funeral home.

My condolences to the Purvis family. Jim was a good man -- kind, funny, smart. I have many fond memories of the time we worked together. I will always appreciate the support he gave to me during my daughter's long illness. It was a pleasure to know and to work with him.

Jim was more than a cousin, he was a very good friend. We remember all the good visits we shared. Always enjoyed playing golf & card games & telling jokes & laughing lots. Jimmie will always be in our thoughts, memories & hearts. Bobby & Joyce..

I met Jim while interning at HRSA. Jim was a wonderful boss, mentor and friend. His knowledge of Civil War history was legendary. When we lived in Maryland, Rod and Jim enjoyed getting together for a round of golf, and afterward Jim, Judy, Rod and I would enjoy dinner and laugh the night away. Jim gave both Rod and me our first (and only) flying lessons, though I admit I did not do a good job of keeping my dirt speck on the horizon. We feel so fortunate to have had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to know Jim. Our thoughts are with you. Paula & Rod
