James Monroe Holbrook, 94, of Rising Sun, MD passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. He was born May 4, 1920 in Dublin, MD to the late Avery A. and Annie M. (Edwards) Holbrook.
James served his country in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner for three years during World War II. He was stationed in Florida and served a tour of duty in Italy. He worked for the Aberdeen Proving Ground as a civil gunner journeyman where he tested weapons and shell rounds for the military. James retired as a foreman after 33 years. An active member of Conowingo Baptist Church, James attended and taught Sunday school for over 60 Years. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and always had a bountiful garden. Most of his joy was given to him by spending time with his family and friends, who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his three sons, Robert Holbrook and wife, Linda, Roland Holbrook, and Steven Holbrook and wife, Kim; four brothers, William, John, Donald, and Kenneth; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Holbrook; his son, Richard Holbrook; sisters, Inez Allen and Anne Elville; and brothers, Spurgeon, Emory, and Philip Holbrook.
Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Conowingo Baptist Church, 151 Rock Springs Rd., Conowingo, MD 21918. Family and friends may visit one hour prior beginning at 10AM. Burial will follow at Conowingo Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution checks can be made to “Conowingo Baptist Church” and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 S.
