James J. Byrne, 85, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at Millcroft Senior Living Facility on February 4, 2013.
Born in Coal Bloom, WV on February 19, 1927, Jim was the son of the late John T. and Marie Riley Byrne. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He volunteered for service during the Second World War and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was later drafted and served in the Korean War as well. Jim had a strong work ethic. He was employed by Westvaco for close to 46 years and only missed one day of work during that time. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Parish. Jim enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading and spending time with his grandsons.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty M. Byrne of Newark; three daughters, Teresa C. Byrne and her husband John W. Symon of Far Hills, NJ, Dolores McMullen and her husband Mike of Haddonfield, NJ, and Eleanor Byrne of Boston, MA; and 2 grandchildren, Tyler James and Nathan Paul McMullen. He was preceded in death by his brother John Byrne and his sister, Margaret Withrow.
According to his wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the Wounded Warrior Project c/o R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
