James H. Dunn, age 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Parkview Nursing Home in Wilmington, DE. He was born on April 14, 1929 in Unionville, PA to the late Joseph and Pearl (Suloff) Dunn.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Rose, son James Dunn and his wife Deborah of New Castle, DE, daughter Judith Cowart and her husband Michael of Jacksonville, FL, son Thomas A. Dunn of Wilmington, DE, and daughter Amy Levin of Wilmington, DE, his 3 grandchildren, Dylan Setzer, Maddi Setzer, and Justin Dunn, six brothers and three sisters – John (Shirl) Dunn, Fred (Pat) Dunn, Mark (Janie) Dunn, Gerry (Marie) Dunn, June (Eddie) Basher, Joann Torello, Pearl Dunn, and the twins, Sam (Norma) Dunn and Boyd (Janie) Dunn, and preceded in death by his brother Joseph (Debbie) Dunn and sister Mary (Lou) Savini.
He grew up in rural Unionville and Toughkennamon, PA, and loved the outdoors. He worked on the King Ranch wrangling cattle at the age of 17, and soon after joined the army, serving in Japan for 2 years during the Korean war. He always said he had the time of his life over there. That was until he met Rose Bello. They met at the Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, DE got married, and settled in Wilmington (except for those 9 months in Jacksonville, Florida).
He was a devoted husband and wonderful father. He loved to golf and garden, often leaving surplus tomatoes on neighbor’s front steps. He loved baseball, especially the Phillies, and coached Jamie and Tom’s baseball teams for a few years. He even taught Judi how to keep the stats. When life seemed to get her down, he was always Amy’s champion, and loved to spend time with his youngest girl.
He was very loved and will be so very missed by all.
