James Carroll Kerns (Rocket), 58, of Conowingo, MD, passed away March 26, 2014 at University of Maryland Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Born in Pimlico, MD on January 23, 1956, Jim was the son of Dorman Carroll Kerns and the late Ida Marie Shaffer Kerns. He was a professional firefighter, retiring from Aberdeen Proving Ground after 32 years of service. He was an avid technology buff and as a hobby enjoyed refining his home automation systems. He enjoyed his walks in the woods with his dogs and took pride in maintaining his property. He was a devoted family man and will be dearly missed by them and his many friends.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Gail E. Kerns of Conowingo; three children Joey Kerns (Heather), Jaime Brooks (Anson) and Timothy Kerns (Jenni); and four grandchildren, Seth and Ava Kerns, Huxley James Brooks and Keith Kerns; a sister, Susan Beck; and two brothers, Ronald and Glenn Kerns.
Services honoring his life will be held at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD 21911 on Tuesday April 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Harford Memorial Gardens.

Jim worked with my brother at APG Fire Department, I remember him from when I went out on Post to see Bubba (Tom Stanford) and also on calls that APG responded on off post, I rode with Abingdon Fire Company. He always had a smile and like to joke around with us, I'm sorry for your lost. I know what it's like to lose a loved one. Uncle Dorman I am so sorry to hear about the death of your son. As you know years ago I lost my son Danny, from an overdose. I just can't express how devastating it was to lose him, so I know how you feel. Also I know it doesn't diminish the sadness the rest of the family must feel.
