OBITUARY
Iwanna Fedyk
Iwanna Hajdukewycz Fedyk was born on January 10, 1936 in the village of Siltse, Pidhaitsi township, Ternopil region, to Luka and Maria Hajdukewycz (nee Pekarksa). She was married for 62 years to Roman Fedyk. She had an older sister, Julia Prokopik and an older brother, Volodymyr Furda, who died fighting as a partisan in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in 1947.
She is survived by her daughter Julia Szyszka (Stephen), sons Roman Fedyk and Adrian Fedyk (Alex), and her grandchildren: Larissa Szyszka, Stephen Szyszka, Lucas Fedyk, Matthew Fedyk, Nina Fedyk, Deanna Fedyk, and Max Fedyk, and other relatives in the US and Ukraine.
In 1947, when the German-Soviet front was passing through Pidhaitsi, the family fled to a temporary safer location. They were never to see their beloved home again. Her family ended up in Bayreuth, Germany in a displaced persons camp. In Bayreuth she attended school and was a member of Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization.
After settling in the US, Iwanna completed Stuyvesant High School in New York City and then attended Rider College, receiving an associate degree in bookkeeping. She worked for Keystone Helicopter Company and then was a long-time employee of Selfreliance Federal Credit Union.
She was a lifelong sportswoman and played volleyball for Sich New York and then Tryzub. She was a competitive tennis player and avidly followed Ukrainian women’s tennis. In Plast she was a member of the Kniahyni sorority and served as treasurer of the Plast Foundation. She was a founding parishioner of St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jenkintown PA.
In retirement she and her husband Roman built their dream home on the Chesapeake Bay in Elkton MD, where she loved caring for her six grandchildren. She is fondly remembered as a cheerful, kind and loving person, always welcoming others with a genuine smile and a warm heart.
