W. Keith Wuerthner left a message on August 26, 2014:
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the Wisniewski family. In the summer of 1948 I attended a boys camp, Absaroka Lodge in Cody, Wyoming, where Irv was a camp counselor. The camp was run by Vic Heyliger, U of Michigan hockey coach who was a close friend of my father who graduated from the U of Michigan Law School in 1912 and moved to Great Falls, Montana where I grew up. Vic used other football players as counselors at the Cody location and Irv is the only counselor's name I can remember and that's been about 66 years ago. It was the greatest summer I ever spent and had to give up playing little league baseball to attend. May he rest in peace. W. Keith Wuerthner Farmington, CT

God our Father, Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives, and by Your command we return to dust. Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end. I pray in hope for your family, relatives and friends, and for all the dead known to You alone. In company with Christ, Who died and now lives, may they rejoice in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen. Love, hugs and peace to all. The Singer family, DeDe, Ray, Chris, Nate and Chantal And Ola and Alicja

Wiz, Martha and Mary you were there for me when I needed help! I will never forget the Blue House and the wonderful memories of safety and peace I experienced living there. Fixing it up and seeing it come back to life was what actually happened to me! Thank you for your trust and unrelenting faith in me during my stay. My condolences are abundant. With much Love; Janice Grant

To Martha and the entire Wisniewski family please accept my belated but very sincere condolences. Playing basketball for Coach Whiz was the highlight of my four years at the U of D. He was not only an excellent coach but a true gentleman. I will always look back on those days with the fondest of memories. Not only the wins, and thanks to him there were many, but also the dinners hosted by Martha at his house, the two on two games my brother Nate and I would play against he and Coach Mal ( Boy was he strong) and the reunion of our 1961,62 team which he organized and encouraged us to attend. He will be missed but never forgotten. Peter Cloud

When I knew Mr. Whiz, I was too young to grasp how awesome he truly was. Varsity Day Camp was the best part of my Childhood, and Mr. Whiz always was happy to see us kids and answer our questions. My love on nature bloomed from all the chances I got to interact with bugs, turtle, and others critters I saw at Varsity. I miss him greatly. Aaron Siegert
James H. Fitch left a message on March 10, 2014:
I am sorry to hear of the passing of Irvin Wisniewski. My parents Glen and Eleanor Fitch were neighbors and friends in Hillsdale when Irv was a football coach. I remember when Irv and Martha took my brother, Dave and I for a week to Varsity Day Camp. I still have the HO engine Irv gave when they moved away. Mom and Dad kept in touch with the Wisniewski's. At one time they treated my parents for an anniversary dinner at Winn Schulers. Mom and Dad had fond memories of the times they spent with the Wisniewski's and they shared these memories with their family.. I graduated from Hillsdale College and have etired from 43 years of teaching. Sincerely, James H. Fitch
James Darby left a message on March 7, 2014:
Mr. Whiz will be greatly missed. My times at Varsity Day Camp and with the Wisniewski family are some of my fondest childhood memories. VSC is a magic place and Mr. and Mrs. Whiz brought it to life. He taught campers right from wrong, good sportsmanship and how to be a team player. I only wish I had the chance to tell him how important he was to myself and others and how he helped shape so many young campers lives. Going to Varsity Day Camp was more like visiting family and Mr. and Mrs. Whiz were our parents for the day. My grandfather, James Hunt, was the trainer at U of M during Whiz's years there and I know they were very fond of each other. My mother was a bridesmaid in his and Martha's wedding. Mr. Whiz taught us how to be good people. I will always be grateful that he and his family were part of my life. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. James Darby

I have many fond memories of being a camper at Varsity Day Camp - honking the horn when going under the Dexter bridge on the way to camp each day ( I still do it, and people think I am nuts ), riding under the dashboard of the car, fishing for bluegills off the dock, swimming, archery - an all-around great time. I'm sure Irv and Jesus are putting together something really special for kids in Heaven right now !!!

Mrs. Wiz and family, I got to know your family through the Varsity Day camp while working for my father and I thought Mr. Wiz was such a great man!!! I really enjoyed my time with him as I did some work around the camp ~ Mr. Wiz you are an inspiration to many people and I would like to say thank you for the time you gave me to get to know you and find out that you were a U of M champion in sports. May God enjoy your presence in Heaven.

As a child attending Varsity Day Camp, I remember sitting on Whiz’s lap in a rocking chair on the veranda of the big house, waiting out a terrible thunderstorm to end that really frightened me. Whiz was so reassuring, kind and a gentle man for being such a strong athletic man; he was sensitive and caring. He quieted my fears and we rode the storm out together. A wonderful man! My sincere apologies for his passing. Mary H Thieme Varsity Day Camp 1962 or so.

I was fortunate to play on teams that had great leaders. Ray Sweeney, MIke Koelher were the men who taught me about was it took to play at Delaware. We were fortunate to be coached by Whiz. He taught us how to play the game from the ground up. We did have a way to get him to tell stories during practice. We would plan who would ask him the question about the Rose Bowls. This usually took place on Tuesdays when the DLine was working their tails off, Whiz would be telling us stories. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. I went into every game I played prepared and confident. He made you feel good about yourself and those around you. EVERY PRE-GAME HE WOULD REPEAT REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU ARE, WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO GET YOU THERE. I use this with my team to this day. My first memory of Coach Wiz was sitting in my dining room convincing me of the benefits of the University. I think the combined glare from my dads and Coach Wiz's bald heads had me convinced to be a Blue Hen. Probably the best if not the most important decision I ever made. This led me on my life's path and influenced most if not everything that followed.. Coach was the man that made me the player I was at Delaware and along with my Dad was one of the biggest influences in my life. I thought of him often and funny enough he was in my thoughts over the last few weeks. Not surprising. One last little note from the Coach . RIP to a great man.

Varsity Day Camp and the whole Wisniewski family have such a warm place in my heart...with the fondest of memories..... I'll never forget the experience of being under Whiz's Camp Directorship and all his family as they demonstrated their strong faith and gentle leadership. We all, campers and counselors alike enjoyed the activities as well as friendships each and every day. Martha, thanks so much for all your Christmas letters - it was so fun to watch your family grow and extend out into the world.. I know you all have wonderful memories and stories to keep you comforted. Celebrate his life...enjoy the wonder of it. Fondly, Lauren

I will never forget the day I was hired at Varsity Day Camp. Whiz and I sitting at a table in the basement of the camp building. He asked when I could start. I replied "Right now." Immediately started raking leaves on the tarp. Just one of the many memories I have from the best job I've ever had. Being a camp counselor for twelve years molded me in into the teacher I am today and my love of the outdoors and hard work and patience was because of VDC. Thanks Whiz. Your family is in our prayers and may you rest in peace. You've impacted many lives and that number increases every day! God bless. The Cogswell Family. Jarrett Tiffany and Sydney.

So sorry to hear the news of Irv's passing. H Ee was a great man and surely will be missed. I am so pleased that Irv allowed me to coach his daughters in volleyball. Mary, Clare and Jane all were great players and Mary and Clare both were strong contributors to the University of Delaware Team. It was my pleasure to serve as a colleague in UD athletics for many years. I am sorry that I will not be able to celebrate Irv's life with you as I am in FL. Please know that my thoughts will be with the entire family on Wed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. Coach Wiz was a kind and caring person. I had him for several classes while at the University of Delaware they were great times. In one class he spoke of “Martha’s cookies” as she prepared them for the campers at Varsity Day Camp. He was my position coach at UD and during a preseason football practice we were all dragging, tired and thirsty. About that time a circus train passed the practice field. Coach turned and made some comments about the train allowing us to grab a few minutes rest. As the train was passing coach Nelson called over “Wiz that’s enough of the train let’s get back to work.” I guess we got our work done as the team went undefeated and was declared national champions. I most recently had the opportunity to speak with coach at the 50th reunion of that championship team. The quarterback on that team was Chuck Zolack, I can remember him telling me on the sideline that the person who could spot the open plays, particularly passing, was Coach Wiz. He could read defenses better than anyone up top, he could somehow read the whole field and know what everyone was doing. He had an amazing mind. I am sorry for your loss, but know that the memories of Coach Wiz will remain with us for a long time to come.

Sincere condolences to Coach Wisniewski's family. I had the honor of serving as the manager of Coach Whiz's basketball team at Delaware from 1958 to 1962. He was about the kindest person I have ever known. Our 1961-62 team was the finest in Delaware history and we were so fortunate to have had our 50 year reunion in 2012 attended by almost everyone on the team. On that occasion, Coach Whiz delivered a very moving tribute to our team, his most successful. Thanks for your many kindnesses, Coach. We will miss you. Larry Erera

I have so many fond memories of "coach Wiz". First was of him sitting in my parents dining room telling me about the University. He convinced me to join the Blue Hen family. It was the best decision I made. So much of my life was a direct result of that decision. He was my coach and I owe my football success to his teaching. I also owe my ability to make good decisions to my father and to my coaches especially to "Coach Wiz". He was in my thoughts often. I'm sure he is leading "bird dog " drills in Heaven. RIP to a great man.

I remember the first time I met Mr. "Whiz", I had just started going to Varsity Day Camp. My Mom had obtained a job there as an employee. I remember we would catch a turtle and we would write on the shell marking it as caught. I remember sticking my finger right next to the turtle's face, despite being told not too. Then the turtle proceeded to bite my finger really hard, cutting the tip of my finger. Mr. Whiz had always been someone that I looked up too. When I was 15 I started working at Varsity. I remember doing the "before opening day work" often working side by side with the very large whiz family. I always enjoyed seeing the joy on Mr. and Mrs. Whiz's face when the kids came storming into camp all amped up at 8:30 in the morning. I am glad that God gave us such a wonderful person. I wish it was longer. My heart goes out the Whiz family. And Mr. Whiz, if you by chance see this or hear it, I look forward to the day we can play box-hockey again.
