Ira Eugene Short

July 30, 1931 - July 29, 2012

Ira Eugene Short, age 80, of Conowingo, MD, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at home. He was born in Richlands, VA to the late Clarence and Mamie (Vance) Short on July 30, 1931.

Gene worked for the State Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer. He also served in the US Army from 1950-1954. He was a member of the American Legion Joseph G. Stahl Post 30 and the VFW Chesapeake Post 7687. Gene enjoyed playing bluegrass music for over 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nina L. Short of Conowingo, MD; son, Greg Short (Michelle) of Rising Sun, MD; daughter, Joyce Palmer of Perryville, MD; brothers, Ralph Short of Wythville, VA, Lacy Short of Port Deposit, MD and Ted Short of Nottingham, PA; sisters, Ruth Justice of Nottingham, PA and Nelli McNaughtly of Rising Sun, MD; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. Gene is also survived by his step-sons, Rev. Gary Puckett (Joan), Ronnie Puckett (Phyllis) and Michael Puckett all of Westminster, MD and Steven Osbourne of NY; step daughter, Kim Puckett; 9 step grandchildren; and 13 step great grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Short; brothers, Clarence and Earl Short; and step-son, Herman Puckett.

Visitation services will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 150 Downin Lane, Port Deposit, MD as well as on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 10:00 am. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the church. Burial will follow at Harford Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen, MD.

I am saddened to hear of Gene's passing. We were in the Army Reserve together and worked together in Delaware Corrections. We always had fun and Gene was a great guy to partner with. We also had some good time at bluegrass shows when he would play his mandolin. Gene leaves with great memories. My sincerest condolences.
