Howard F. Delp, Sr. “Chief”, age 82, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center in Rising Sun, MD. He was born on October 31, 1933 in Piney Creek, NC, to the late D. Luther Delp and the late Virginia Blanche (Billings) Delp.
Howard owned and operated Sun Electric Company with his business partner, Harvey Coale. He served on the Board of Electrical Examiners and was the 64th person to obtain an Electrical license in the state of Maryland. He was employed as head electrician of the Electrical Department at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where at the time of his retirement he was the highest ranking civilian on post. Howard was a longtime member of Janes United Methodist Church where he served on many councils. He was a proud member of the Masonic Harmony Lodge #53 in Port Deposit, MD for over 50 years. Howard was involved in many community organizations and activities, including: the Rising Sun Little League, International Order of Jobs Daughters – past associate Bethel Guardian, Bethel #55, Darlington, and the Order of Eastern Star – Darlington Chapter #105. He was a hardworking man but reserved his Sunday’s for his family and his faith.
In his spare time, he enjoyed NASCAR, particularly Bill Elliott. Howard enjoyed golfing, being the 35th member to join the Chantilly Manor Golf Club. He held many championships at Chantilly but was especially proud of winning the Grandfather’s Golf tournament on the very day that he first became a grandfather. Howard enjoyed traveling, watching the Redskins and the Orioles; but his most cherished time was spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren because his family was his life.
He is survived by his daughters: Deborah Kubala and her husband, Alex, Vickie Mink and her husband, Muncy, and Christine Killough, and her husband, Brian; daughter-in-law, Diana Delp; nine grandchildren: Niki McCoy, Andrew Kubala, A.J. Kubala, Preston Greer, Howard F. Delp, III, Morgan Killough, Justin Killough, Lee Mink, and Darrick Mink; ten great grandchildren; and his sister, Alma Foster and her husband, Bill.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth C. Delp; son, Howard F. Delp, Jr., granddaughter, Jacki Killough and his brother, Jerry G. Delp.
A service will be held in Howard’s honor at 12 Noon on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Janes United Methodist Church, 213 Walnut Street, Rising Sun, MD 21911, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10AM. Burial will follow at Brookview Cemetery in Rising Sun, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution checks can be made payable to “Janes United Methodist Church” and sent in care of the funeral home.
