Herman Stanley age 93, born December 5, 1929, in Mitchell County, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior January 5, 2023.
Herman was married to Georgie M. Stanley for 73 years prior to her death, living in the Oxford, Nottingham, Rising Sun and North East area for most of their married life. Herman is survived by his daughter, Esta Marie Mercadante (Michael), daughter, Billie Sue Barber (Robert), daughter, Betty Lou Marion (Wayne), and son, Dewey Brian Stanley (Carma), eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Lola Morales, Evelyn Bennett and Shirley Pittman, and brothers William Stanley and Earl Stanley (Jean).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgie M. Stanley, and his son, Herman David Stanley.
Herman had an affinity for working with horses and was an accomplished rider and showman. He won numerous trophies and ribbons in jumping competitions. In later years, he was a licensed owner and trainer, racing thoroughbreds in the Tri-State area. He also loved trail riding and fox hunting. Over the years he was a member of various hunt clubs, most recently riding with Foxcatcher Hounds in Fair Hill, Maryland.
He and his wife enjoyed making Apple Butter in a cast iron cauldron over an open fire, well into their eighties. For most of their married life they grew a large garden of vegetables which they enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
Herman was retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground and had worked at Bainbridge Naval Training Center before transferring to APG.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at 3:00 PM at the Nazarene Church – 2626 Jacob Tome Memorial Highway ( Route 276) Colora, Maryland.
