Helen “Chickie” Lampton Lowe Whitcombe

Age 92, Wilmington, DE

Passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born on July 27, 1932, in Jackson, MS, Chickie was the daughter of the late John Blake Lowe and the late Lala Helen (Lampton) Lowe.

Chickie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cherished friend, and mentor. Her remarkable spirit, strength, and infectious laugh will forever resonate within the hearts of all who knew her.

Chickie was a 1948 Baltimore, MD Debutante and a proud 1950 graduate of Bryn Mawr High School, Baltimore, MD. She went on to earn her degree in English Literature from Wheaton College, Norton, MA, in 1954, where she also served as Captain of the Lacrosse Team. She was a member of the National Republican Committee and Newark Methodist Church. During the 1960’s she wrote numerous articles for the Newark Post.

A longtime member of Newark Country Club since 1956, Chickie served on numerous committees, including as Ladies Golf Chairwoman in 1988. She loved the golf course, where she achieved the remarkable feat of two holes in one and was a two-time Ladies Senior Champion.

Chickie is survived by her sons: Christopher Blake Whitcombe (wife, Cheryl) and John S. Whitcombe (wife, Patricia); her grandchildren: Christopher Carl, Steven John, Richard Blake, Jonathan Edward, and Brandon Blake; as well as her great-grandchildren: Coben, Lailie, Cleo, Lewis, and Verity.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Christopher Roy Whitcombe, who passed in 1992.

A celebration of Chickie’s life will be held at 1:15 PM on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Harbor Chase, 2004 Shipley Road, Wilmington, DE. Family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 12:30 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Faithful Friends Animal Society” and sent in care of R.T. Foard and Jones, Inc., 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE.
