Hazel Ewing Jenkins, age 90, of Colora, MD passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Harford Memorial Hospital. Hazel was born on October 25, 1922 in Colora, MD to the late Samuel and Lillian (Garrett) Ewing.
She graduated from Colora Public School in 1935, Rising Sun High School in 1939, and attended Goldey Business College from 1940 to 1941. Hazel was a part of the WOW (Womens Ordinance Workers) during World War II, and spent the rest of her career with the US Government at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Bainbridge Naval Training Center retiring after 47 years of service in March 1990. She was a very active member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, and organized Cub Pack 92 in 1952 serving as Den Mother for 16 years, and was the first woman in the Chester County Council to receive the Silver Fawn Award. Hazel was involved with the creation of the West Nottingham Academy Parents Association during 1960, and organized the Colora Civic Association in 1992 where she served as President . During 1997 she helped author the Colora History Book. Hazel enjoyed being with her family and friends, playing cards, watching sports, and dancing to “Big Band” music.
She is survived by her sons, Wayne Jenkins and wife Evelyn of Canyon, TX, Kenneth Jenkins of Colora, MD and Richard Jenkins and wife Tracy of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Wayne, Michael, Patrick and Chad Jenkins; great grandchildren, Justin, Ashlyn, Ryan, Amelia, Devin and Taylor Jenkins; and great great grandchildren, Sunday and Madison Jenkins.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Jenkins; grandson, Travis Jenkins and brother, Garrett Ewing.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1713 Liberty Grove Road, Colora, MD 21917. A visitation will be held at the R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, June 17, 2013 or one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at West Nottingham Cemetery in Colora, MD. Memorial contribution checks may be made payable to Mt. Pleasant UMC or Wounded Warriors and mailed to the funeral home.
