Harry R. McKenry, age 91, of Newark, DE passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Millcroft Nursing Home in Newark, DE. He was born March 12, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Harry and Marie (Boecking) McKenry.
Harry earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1944, graduating from the University of Delaware. He worked in human resources, recruiting employees for Atlas Chemical, ICI Americas, and Astra Zeneca. Harry coached and umpired in the Newark Little Leagues for 16 years. For 21 years, Harry was a citizen volunteer for the Newark Police Department reviewing/preparing reports and interacting with the media. He was awarded the prestigious “Jefferson Award” for outstanding community service in 2013. Harry devoted time at the Newark Senior Center and served several terms on its board of directors.
Harry was an avid stamp collector and had a fine collection of decoys also. He was a long time University of Delaware supporter – attending many football and basketball games.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Gerlach McKenry; his son David McKenry and his wife Diane of Middletown, DE; his daughter Judy Quillen and her husband James of Pulaski, VA; stepsons Kenneth R. Foster and partner Larry of Hellertown, PA, and Douglas W. Foster and wife Karen of Hockessin, DE; stepdaughter
Leslie A. Foster and husband Richard of Oakland, CA; and five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Frances Cox McKenry, and brother Robert McKenry.
A visitation celebration of Harry’s life will be held from 3-5PM on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
