Harry H. Howard, Jr., 98, former Bethlehem Steel Executive, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013 in Kirkland Village. Born November 28, 1914, in Chesapeake City, Maryland, he was the son of the late Harry, Sr. and Lillie (Woolford) Howard.

A 1935 graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District before joining the Bethlehem Steel Corporation Home Office in 1937. However, most of his career with Bethlehem Steel was spent in their Shipbuilding Department at the division’s headquarters in New York City. For a number of years he served as the department’s representative on the Shipbuilder’s Council of America’s industry wide committee on Industrial Relations, Safety and Environmental Protection. From 1973-1974 he served as Chairman of the Marine Section of the National Safety Council. He was also a member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Marine Chemist Qualification Board, and served as Chairman of the Board. He was an assistant to the Vice-President of Shipbuilding when he retired in 1979, after 43 years of service with the company. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. He was also a member of Saucon Valley Country Club and the former Bethlehem Club. He was one of the organizers of Valley Volunteers, Inc., an organization sponsored by Bethlehem Steel to assist their interested retirees in getting involved in local volunteer work commensurate with their skills and interests. He served as secretary of the Corporation and served in that capacity on their Board of Trustees for five years.

Throughout his life Harry enjoyed restoring antique furniture, caning chairs and reupholstering furniture. When he and his wife, Emily, moved into Kirkland Village in 1994, he became involved in the facility’s workshop and eventually became chairperson. He also enjoyed being on the Kirkland Village Pool team, and loved playing bridge.

Surviving are sons, Richard P. Howard, and wife Ginny of Lebanon, NJ; Harry H. Howard, III, and wife Brenda of Severna Park, MD; grandson, Richard Howard, Jr.; granddaughter Gail Lind and her husband Bob; great grandchildren Kaelin, Kyle and Matt; and other relatives in Chesapeake City, Maryland.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Emily (Penn) Howard, his long time companion, Josephine Gunn and his sister, Eloise Davis. Services:

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. in the Bethel Cemetery, 312 Bethel Cemetery Road, Chesapeake City, Maryland.
