H. Alfred Tarrant, Jr. passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017. He was born September 23, 1935 in Wilmington, DE to the late Harold Alfred Tarrant, Sr. and Carter Cover Tarrant.
H. Alfred Tarrant, Jr. grew up in Wilmington and was a graduate of the old Wilmington High School. He received his undergraduate at Washington & Lee University, class of 1957. Fred received his master’s degree in 1959 from the University of Delaware. He continued his education in law and received his degree from the University Of Maryland School Of Law, class of 1961. After law school, he married the love of his life, Shirley Mae (Riley) Tarrant, and shortly thereafter they moved to Newark. Fred was an attorney at Cooch and Taylor Attorneys at Law for 50 years, only recently retiring in 2015. The National Academy of Family Law Attorneys recognized him as a top ten family law attorney. He was active with, and recently served as a vice president for the Newark Lions Club. Fred also was a huge supporter of University of Delaware athletics and owned season football tickets on the 50 yard-line for more than 50 years, as well as a season ticketholder for men and women’s basketball. He was also a LA Dodgers Fanatic. Fred enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
H. Alfred Tarrant, Jr. is survived by his daughter, Marci Tarrant Johnson (Cleveland Darrell Johnson) of Baltimore, MD; granddaughter; Annabella Mae Johnson of Baltimore, MD; nephew, Stephen Tarrant of Potomac Falls, VA; and nephew, Timothy Tarrant of Fallston, MD. In addition to his parents, Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley M. Tarrant; and brother, Stephen Tarrant.
Burial for H. Alfred Tarrant will be held privately at the Head of Christiana Cemetery in Newark, DE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the “Shirley M. Tarrant Memorial Scholarship,” at the University of Delaware and sent in care of the R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
