George Wilson Murray, III, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. He was born on October 23, 1946, in Wilmington, DE to the late George Wilson Murray, Jr. and Pauline Elizabeth (Aument) Murray.
George was a proud veteran, serving in the US Army. After his military service, George embarked on a fulfilling career as a Lab Technician at Dupont before retiring. George was not only dedicated to his career but also to the community around him. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts Troop 603 (Newark, DE), serving as a Campmaster at Camp Rodney and earned the Vigil honor in the Order of the Arrow (OA), as a member of Nentego Lodge 20. George was also a member of the Nentego Lodge Cook Crew and helped cook meals at OA events. As a member of the Boy Scouts and Order of the Arrow, along with his son Will, George enjoyed collecting memorabilia and attending Trade-O-Rees.
George enjoyed tinkering with small steam and gas engines, finding joy in the intricate details and mechanics of these machines. His enthusiasm extended to attending shows where he could share his passion with others who appreciated the art and science behind these remarkable engines. He also enjoyed collecting blow torches and was a member of the Blow Torch Collectors Association (BTCA) and attended shows to display his collection.
George loved to fish local ponds and creeks. It didn’t matter what time of day, if he was in the mood to fish, he’d grab his rod, tackle and a camp chair and see what he could catch.
George was known as “Poppie” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he loved very much and loved spending time with.
A beloved husband, father, and friend, George’s life was a testament to dedication, passion, and service. He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.
