He was a member of the "Rat Patrol" in the Wilmington Riots (1968-69); helped clear demonstrators from Legislative Hall (1969); and worked to control the Civil Disturbance in Rehoboth Beach (1970). During his career he was assigned to Troop 1, Penny Hill; Troop 2, State Road; Troop 2A, Kirkwood Highway; Troop 6, Price's Corner; Troop 7, Dewey Beach; Troop 9, Odessa; Headquarters, Dover, and the Auto Theft Unit, Motor Vehicle Division. He qualified as an "Expert Witness " by the Superior Court in a number of areas of Automobile Identification and also in various aspects of photography. He also was an Evidence Technician, assigned to the Criminalistics Unit, Troop 2 CIU, State Road. Corporal George Patterson #103 retired on disability on November 30, 1979. First, my condolences to the Patterson family. George and I worked together at the old Troop # 2. In 1977, I was a newly appointed Detective and George was a highly experienced investigator who was one of the original Forensic Evidence Technicians. This was the perfect assignment for him that combined his broad experience with his high level of intelligence. He was always available for investigative assistance and consultation. He did not know what could not be done and was always up to any challenge. In one of my cases, he provided the key evidence that led to the incarceration of a career criminal. One day, I was visiting him at his home when there was a minor traffic accident on the street in front of his house. The driver was deaf and was having trouble dealing with the accident. After the mandatory 911 reporting, George stayed with the gentleman for hours helping him deal with the situation and then re-united him with his family. He loved being a State Trooper. RIP.

Sincere Condolences to George's family. When I was a DSP detective, George helped me solve the rape of a child. George's knowledge of the car industry was instrumental in identifying the culprit's car which led to his arrest. I will forever have George to thank for his assistance. He was truly one-of-kind and one of the best troopers on the force.
