George Edward Heinsohn, age 81 of Elkton, MD passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE.
George was born and raised in Springfield Gardens neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens, NY, on November 28, 1941, where he made friends for life. He pursued higher education at Brooklyn Polytech College for BS degree, followed by working for General Tire in Akron, OH. He continued his education at SUNY Albany for MS degree, followed by working for General Electric. He continued his education at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, for PhD degree (and wife Mary) and post-doctoral studies at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. He then had a successful career as a research chemist at E. I. Dupont Company in Wilmington, DE, earning 18 patents.
He loved the outdoors, beginning with an annual visit to a family camp at Rondaxe Lake in the NY Adirondack mountains every year from birth. He enjoyed camping, scuba diving, flying, sailing, and building. He pursued every interest with passion. He got certified as instrument flight instructor and dive instructor. He hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, flew our Cessna 172 N80612 to Mexico and sailed our 37-foot sloop Excalibur to Puerto Rico. He built his dream home at Nanticoke, MD, on the Chesapeake Bay, and lived there for over 25 years.
He will be missed by his wife Mary of over 50 years, his 2 rescue dogs Maggie and Margo and his many life-long friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George J. Heinsohn and Anna Barbara (Haller) Heinsohn.
There will be a memorial service for his friends in the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the “Humane Society of Wicomico County” or “St Jude Children’s Research Hospital” and sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 259 E. Main Street, Elkton, MD 21911.
