Gary Higgins of Newark, DE, age 70, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021. Gary was born on June 30, 1951 in Quincy, MA to the late Wilbur Crump Higgins and Louise Nelson (Johnston) Higgins.
Gary had a heart of gold; he was a loving husband, father and grandfather (Poppi), dedicated mentor, and great friend to many. Recently retired from a career in financial services, Gary enjoyed golfing every week at Patriots Glen with his friends and his 20-year running Wednesday night poker game. Gary was a music lover, from Classical to Rock and especially Blues, and loved strumming his acoustic guitar. He was a master of the BBQ and enjoyed cooking, whether it be an impromptu grill out with the neighbors or an all-day cooking affair for a family Sunday dinner. He frequently traveled to visit with friends and family and loved going to Mexico with his wife, brother and sister-in-law. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge and Lions Club and was involved in different community service activities through the years. No matter what capacity you knew Gary, you can be sure you would recognize his friendly and curious nature, his great ability to warm up a room, and to be inclusive and kind to all he encountered.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan Higgins; 3 children: Alan Fitzgerald Higgins, Amy Higgins and her wife, JoAnna Fitzhugh, and Janelle Wikes and her husband, J.R. Wikes; 4 grandchildren: Peyton, Reese, Parker and Dawson Wikes; brother, David Higgins and his wife, Suzanne; nephews: Michael Cornell and his husband, Paul Henning, Nathan Higgins, Noah Higgins and his wife, Libby and niece, Sandi Foote and her husband, Keith.
