Gaither Vaughn Gilley, 88, formerly of Colora, Maryland, lovingly known to his family as “Poppy,” went to be with his Lord on October 10, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. Born in West Jefferson, North Carolina, on June 1, 1938, he was the son of the late Vaughn Gaither Gilley and Juanita Gilley (née Houck) and the devoted husband of the late Peggy Gilley (née Carter), who passed away earlier in 2016.
Gaither proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a long and dedicated career with General Motors. For 35 years, he worked as a materials handler, earning the respect of his coworkers through his hard work and commitment. After many years of service, he enjoyed a well-deserved retirement.
A man of faith, Gaither was a dedicated member of Gateway Baptist Church in Conowingo. Gaither found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially fishing and deer hunting. He held a special place in his heart for the western ridge of the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, where family trips created memories that would be treasured for generations. He also enjoyed woodworking, putting his skill and patience into creating beautiful pieces. He remained a loyal fan and lifelong supporter of the Baltimore Orioles.
Those who knew Gaither will remember his unmistakable personality and the little routines that made him who he was. He was a creature of habit, right down to eating the same breakfast every day. He liked things done his way, spoke his mind, and never left anyone guessing what he thought. His straightforward nature was part of his charm, and his family knew and loved him for exactly who he was.
But above all else, Gaither was a family man. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy. Though his absence leaves a tremendous void, the lessons he taught, the traditions he established, and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of his family forever. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Gaither was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Powers; his son, Jeffrey Gilley; grandson Craig Gilley and his siblings, Susie, Nancy, Gerald “Bunk” Gilley, and Robert Gilley. Among his siblings, he was affectionately known simply as “Brother,” a special family name that reflected the bond they shared.
He is survived by his loving family, daughter, Laura Worrilow and her husband, Brian; son, Gregory Gilley and his wife Kerstin; grandchildren: Ashley Dickerson; Brooke Higgins; Nate Worrilow; Joshua Worrilow; Kayla Corey; Jacob Gilley; Alyssa Gilley, Luke Gilley; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Braden, and Zeke, along with extended family members and dear friends who will continue to cherish his memory.
A celebration of Gaither’s life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 111 South Queen Street, Rising Sun, Maryland. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at Brookview Cemetery.
