Frederick Chorlton Mitchell Jr.

Frederick Chorlton Mitchell, Jr., age 91 of Newark, DE passed away on February 15, 2022. He was born on May 12, 1930 in Wilmington, DE to the late Frederick Chorlton Mitchell, Sr. and Elizabeth (Mansfield) Mitchell.

He was a graduate of Friends School in Wilmington. After graduating from MIT with degree in chemical engineering he served in the US Air Force and continued to do engineering in the rocket industry as a civilian. He enjoyed playing golf, chess, and Bridge. He loved reading and was often seen with a book in his hand. He was interested in a wide variety of subjects and enjoyed intellectual banter.

In his earlier years, Fred was a proud member of Sons of the American Revolution and the U S Chess Club.

Fred is survived by his children: Fred Mitchell, III (Amy), Ed Mitchell (Nicole), Don Mitchell, Brad Mitchell (Becky), and Cliff Mitchell (Arleen); grandchildren: Roger Mitchell, Edmund Mitchell, Christina Mitchell, Ethan Mitchell, Jennifer DeCelles, Megan Mitchell,  Sharon Mitchell, Philip Mitchell, Julia Cooper, Ben Mitchell, Jon Mitchell, and Sarah Tennefoss; great grandchildren: Milo Mitchell, Chase Mitchell, Grant Mitchell, Inga Tennefoss, and Abigail Tennefoss; sisters: Elizabeth Waldo and Peggy (Murry) Soash; and cousin, Harry Funk.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Lucia (Girard) Mitchell whom he loved dearly and deeply missed in the 7 years since her passing.

Services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Meals on Wheels” and sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
