Frank A. Konwinski, Jr., age 70, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Christiana Hospital. Frank was born in Hamilton, Bermuda on October 14, 1944. He was the only child of the late Frank A. Konwinski, Sr. and Beatrice Kyme Konwinski.
He was an avid sailor and member of the Spanish Point Boat Club in Bermuda. He also played soccer. He attended Mount St. Agnes Academy in Bermuda, Temple University and the University of Delaware. For many years, Frank enjoyed windsurfing, tennis and attending every sporting event his daughters participated in, from cross country and track meets, to field hockey, basketball and softball games. His greatest pleasure was cheering on his daughters. He and his wife, Mary, were also long-time season ticket holders for UD men’s and women’s basketball.
Frank retired from the State of Delaware Department of Labor as Manager of Systems and Programming. He volunteered his time with the American Red Cross and served as a sailing instructor for several years with the Eastern Shore Small Craft Institute. He also coached youth soccer for Kirkwood Soccer and the City of Newark Department of Parks and Recreation. He was proficient in woodworking, home improvements and gardening. In recent years, he looked forward to his weekly ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) breakfasts with friends. He loved Carly Simon, Elvis and the Beatles.
Frank was a kind and caring person. He loved his family and was a loyal friend. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Joshua Frank Smedley. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary McCartan Konwinski, his daughters, Shannon Topple (Kevin) of Devonshire, Bermuda, Kelly Smedley (Jimmy), of Durham, North Carolina, and Laura Gibson (Matthew) of Franklinton, North Carolina and his beloved grandchildren, Ryan Topple, Jake, Ben, Leah and Anna Smedley, and Claire Gibson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Monday, September 21, 2015, at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazier Road, Newark, DE 19702. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, and one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the CJ Foundation for SIDS or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and sent c/o the funeral home.
