Ennis L. Mitchell, age 92 of Newark, DE passed away on February 25, 2022. He was born in Atlanta, GA on January 11, 1930, to the late Ennis and Mary Jackson.
Ennis served in the Philadelphia Police Department for 22 years, retiring as a Homicide Detective in 1978. He served in the U.S. Military both active and reserve units from 1947 to 1990, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam as an Advisor to the Vietnamese, receiving a Bronze Star for his service. Ennis is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, DC. He retired from the Military as Full Bird Colonel in 1990. Ennis began employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1978 as a Welfare Fraud Specialist and retired as Claims Investigation Agent Manager II, Office of the Inspector General in 1996. Ennis received countless awards, citations and medals in all his endeavors throughout his military and civilian careers.
Outside of his career, Ennis was very active in his church, Holsey Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, watching TV, discussing world issues and listening to jazz music. Despite the numerous positions he held, his family has always been his top priority in his life. He was the family patriarch and was always ministering to the needs and concerns of all.
Ennis is survived by his wife, Geraldine Mitchell; one son Tyrone Macey Jr.; five daughters: Stephanie Hedgepath, Denise Raison, Maria Michael, Susan Harmon, and Shirla Mitchell-Reed; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ennis was preceded in death by the late Eugene Macey and Patricia Boyd.
A celebration of Ennis’ life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 7, 2022, at R.T. Foard Funeral home, 259 East Main Street Elkton, MD 21921 where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
