Joan Bauer, of Newark, Delaware and Town Point, Maryland died peacefully at home on May 25, 2023.
Joan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 27, 1930, to Elizabeth Comber Chandlee and William Herbert Chandlee Jr. Her childhood was spent in Montgomery County, PA with her older brother William Herbert Chandlee III and younger sister Carol Lillian Chandlee. The family later moved to Southampton, Bucks County, PA where Joan met her future husband Richard “Dick” Milton Bauer at Southampton High School.
Joan graduated from Southampton High School, Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA and the Abington Hospital School of Nursing in Abington, PA.
Joan worked for the State of Delaware Health Department as a Public Health Nurse for 25 years.
Joan and Dick and their family spent 38 wonderful summers on the Chesapeake Bay at their home called “River House” on Town Point, MD. Sailing her Sunfish, a gift from Dick for their 25th wedding anniversary, and then her Flying Scot named “Happy Birthday,” another gift from Dick, was her great pleasure…her family was her greatest.
Joan will join her beloved husband and life partner Dick in All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.
Joan is survived by her four children, Elisabeth Chandlee Bauer DiStefano and her husband Ernest DiStefano, Richard Milton Bauer Jr, Benjamin Chandlee Bauer, and Caroline Chandlee Bauer and her partner Sharon Czerwinski.
She is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Benjamin Chandlee Bauer Jr, his wife Megan Bauer and their children Austin, Zoey, and Allison Chandlee Bauer; Laura Elisabeth Taylor, her wife Kim Taylor, and their daughter Lily; and twins Erin Chandlee Czerwinski and Elizabeth Bauer Czerwinski, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan is also survived by her adored mother and daughter cats “Mommy” and “Baby.” Caroline and Sharon are adopting them and taking them to their retirement in Key West, Florida.
Per Joan’s request, services will be private.
