Born in Norwood, New York, on January 1st, 1926, he resided in Hudson Falls and Norwood, NY. His other residences were Smyrna, DE; Colton and Ogdensburg, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania; Newark, DE; and Birmingham, AL. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Iowa during World War II. A graduate of Potsdam State University, he went on to obtain his Master’s in Science Education from The University of Pennsylvania and continued to gather another 100+ hours of Master’s level education studies from all over the United States including the University of Chicago, Wisconsin and the University of Alabama.
Ed spent most of his adult life as a science teacher/educator. His career in teaching spanned from elementary school in Colton, New York, to high school in Newark, Delaware, and at the International School Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania in East Africa. Although his main subject was Physics, he also taught geology, biology, geometry, and math. Ed made special efforts to reach the entire spectrum of students who passed through his classroom doors; from those he mentored as the National Honor Society sponsor to those students whom needed assistance with general math. Students knew that he would help them to understand. He wasn’t an easy teacher, but if you were willing to put in the effort he would respond tenfold. Calls and visits from current and former students were not uncommon in the Stowell household. His impact was felt over several generations of students; many who still communicate with the family to this day. Prior to teaching he was a chemist.
Active in his church, Ed served both as Deacon and Elder for the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church and an Elder at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware. He was also a member of Lake Crest Presbyterian Church in Hoover, AL. He taught many Bible Studies and never stopped learning. As a student of the Bible, he was interested in the Hebraic Roots of his Faith.
An avid golfer throughout most of his life, he also spent time bowling, dancing and was very active in the Ham radio community in Delaware. While in Africa he learned to fly small aircrafts and obtained his private pilot’s license. He served in Delaware’s Civil Air Patrol for many years. He loved to watch football and spew torrents of advice at his most disappointing team, the Philadelphia Eagles. To say the least, he will be dearly missed.
