Captain Edward Sowers Schweizer, USN (Ret), age 82 of Chesapeake City, MD passed away of congestive heart failure on January 6, 2021. He was born on May 6, 1938 in Houston, TX to the late General John Mel Schweizer, Jr. and Alicia (Sowers) Schweizer.

Ed received a number of degrees from multiple universities. He was a graduate of University of Paris- La Sorbonne (D.S.), Occidental College in Los Angeles (B.A.), and Pepperdine University in Malibu (M.A.) and Officers Candidate School Newport, RI.

Ed proudly served in the United States Navy for 26 years. He retired as a Navy Captain. He dedicated his life to serve his country. Following his Navy career, he worked for the Department of Justice as the Assistant Center Director of Administration, for the West Coast offices of Immigration, INS. Ed was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Surface Warfare Association, Naval Reserve Association, Reserve Officers Association, Alpha Tau Omega, the Lions Club of Mission Viejo, and he was a Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus. Recently he joined the Elk River Yacht, where he acted as a Fleet Captain. Ed was the proprietor and host of DOC Smithers B&B in Chesapeake City, MD since 2004.

Ed had an abiding, strong faith as a Catholic. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Elkton, MD. He was an Air Force “brat” so he lived in multiple countries. He loved antique cars, traveling the world, collecting stamps and coins, gardening, playing the piano, politics, singing with choral groups, focusing on his health and fitness, and was a designated expert marksman. He also loved acting and performed in several plays and at the Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters in California.

Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Suzan Schweizer; son, Edward Sowers Schweizer, Jr., daughters: Sally Alicia DePasquale and her husband, Ricci and Elizabeth Scarbrough and her husband, Marce; grandchildren: Ricci DePasquale, Jr., Joseph DePasquale and his wife, Lexi, Alicia DePasquale, John Edward DePasquale, David Naumann and wife Stacey, Nicholas Rhodes and his wife, Amber, and Andrew Scarbrough; and 7 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, John Mel Schweizer, III.

Due to the Pandemic restrictions, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held with just the immediate family on Monday the 18th of January. The service will be live streamed at the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/71407314123 for those who would like to join us virtually. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family invites you to honor Ed by partaking in a Wreath Ceremony, where military honors will also be performed outside of Pell Gardens in Chesapeake City, MD. This will take place following the mass on Monday, January 18, 2021 at approximately 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Immaculate Conception Church” or a charity of your choice in Ed’s honor. Please send in care of R.T.
