Edward J. Guringo, Newark, Delaware, passed away on Tuesday, October 12th at age 83, while in the care of Somerford Place, surrounded by his loving family.
Ed enjoyed a long and successful life and career.
He was born on August 14, 1938, in Harrisburg, PA where he and his siblings were raised by their parents, Edward L. and Nada Guringo. Ed was pre-deceased by his wife of 56 years, Ruth, both parents and brother, Ronald.
Ed is survived by sons Mark A Guringo of Lincoln University, Pa and Jeffrey J Guringo of Newark, his grandchildren Matt and Alexis Guringo, daughter-in-law Polly and her children Robbie, Leah and Rachel Dows, his sister, Ann Guringo, and brother, Joseph Guringo of Harrisburg.
Ed was also very close to brother and sister-in- law, Raymond and Jeanne Grill of Tampa, FL, sister- in- law, Judy, of Chula Vista, CA, and their families.
Ed attended John Harris High School in Harrisburg where he was a stand-out player who lettered in both football and baseball. He was also active in student government.
He attended Indiana State University and then West Chester University, where he met his wife to be and graduated from with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Ed went on to earn his Master’s degree from the University of Delaware in Educational Administration.
He spent 35 years in public education in Delaware, as a teacher and coach at Dover HS and then Mt. Pleasant HS. He moved into administration at Mt. Pleasant JHS in 1966 and then became assistant principal at Newark HS in 1969. Ed was principal at McKean HS from 1972 – 1981 and then chosen to become the Director of Secondary Education for the Red Clay Consolidated School District where he served until his retirement from education in 1991.
During his career Ed served on and/or chaired various State of Delaware committees and task forces to help organize and develop educational standards, regulations and academic competencies. He was an advisor to the State Board of Education and chairperson or member of several State-wide Academic and Athletic Tournament Committees.
After he retired, Ed worked for 8 years in the automotive business and then, part-time, another 10 years as an Attendance Specialist in Colonial School District.
When not working, he was GM or coach of numerous local summer baseball teams and helped organize regional and local baseball tournaments. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and officer or member of several local civic associations.
Ed was a devoted husband and father and was known for his ability to make a short story long. He loved to golf and was an active member of Newark Country Club for over 20 years. He developed an interest in multiple animal rights organizations with his wife Ruth.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711 on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. There will be visitation from 10-11 a.m. Interment will be held privately at All Saints Cemetery.
