Dr. Edgar “Ed” Parker Small III of Newark, DE, age 55, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 11, 2022. He was born on April 27, 1966 in White Plains, NY to Edgar Parker Small, Jr. and Kathleen “Kathy” (Hale) Small.
Ed came to faith in Jesus Christ while a student at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo) where he earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctorate in Civil Engineering. Ed served with the US Department of Transportation in the Federal Highway Administration and made important contributions to improving the safety of our nation’s bridges. He always valued helping others and making a difference, and that led him to be a professor.
Ed began his teaching career at Catholic University of America. He then spent 9 years at American University in Dubai and eventually returned to Delaware, where he was an Associate Professor and Founding Director of the Construction Engineering Management program at University of Delaware. Through his passion, dedication, and leadership, the program grew rapidly. He was beloved by faculty, staff, and especially students, many of whom studied abroad with him.
He was a loving father and husband who enjoyed traveling, history, and dad jokes. He was a faithful Christian and loved his church community. He most recently served on the Missions Committee of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Landenberg, Pa.
Edgar is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Wendy Small; two daughters: Julia Kathleen Small and Sophia Marie Small; parents, Edgar and Kathy Small; two sisters: Heather Gismondi and Stacey Gotham; his dog Milo, and his cat Lucy; and numerous extended family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10am on Saturday, February 26th at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 109 Gypsy Hill Rd., Landenberg, PA 19350, where family and friends may begin visiting at 9am. Burial will follow the service at Head of Christiana Cemetery.
