Dorothy M. Hanson, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Season’s Hospice at Christiana Care in Newark, DE. She was born on August 26, 1925, in Wilmington, DE to the late Middleton and Helen Merion Hanson.
After her nursing training at the Wilmington Hospital Nursing School, she was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S Navy in 1951. She served on the hospital ship the USNS Patch during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Sasebo, Japan. She also served in United Nations Peace-Keeping missions, stationed in Bremerhaven, West Germany. She retired after 20 years of service in 1971 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After her retirement, she worked at A. I. DuPont Children’s Hospital.
Dorothy loved gardening, and animals of all kinds. She was especially fond of English Setters and owned several champions. An avid golfer, she played regularly and was a member of Newark Country Club.
She is survived by 3 nieces, Susan V. Caesar of Philadelphia, PA, Marsha V. Hahn of Mystic, CT, and Brenda V. Glenn of Wilmington, DE; 7 grand-nieces and 2 grand-nephews; 5 great-grandnieces and 2 great-grandnephews; and her beloved caretaker, Akou.
