Dorothy “Dottie” Louise Smith of Bear, DE, age 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at home with her family by her side. She was born in Elk Mills, MD on February 14, 1937, to the late Norman C. Simpers and Emily (Weber) Simpers.

Dottie worked for a veterinary clinic for over 30 years until her retirement in 2011. Dottie met some of her lifelong friends during her years at the veterinary clinic and shared their mutual fondness for animals. Dottie was especially fond of cats and has adopted numerous cats over the years. Dottie enjoyed shopping and dining out with family and friends while finding her greatest joy in caring for her home and family. Dottie and Al were well known to host wonderful holiday parties for their closest friends and family for which were quite enjoyable.

Dottie is survived by her beloved husband and companion of nearly 50 years, Alton (Al) Hutchinson. She has been a wonderful mother to step-son, Robert Hutchinson, and mother in law to his wife, Susan, of Middletown, DE. She will be sadly missed by her two grandsons, Bryan Hutchinson (Hope Calvetti) of Dover, DE and Bradley Hutchinson of Middletown, DE, as well as and two great-grandsons, Carson and Case Hutchinson.

A celebration of Dottie’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, 259 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921, where family and friends may begin visiting at 10:30 am. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “ASPCA” and send in the care of the funeral home.
